Color and Texture Study

Use Photoshop to overlay drawings

1. Texture Study
From dark heavy soil of the field to the bright light chimney stack in the industrial complex, from wooden to medal material , there're even different texture for the same material after decades years, like glossy medal surface to the rusty surface. The texture of the district plays a very important role to effect people's feeling of the site.

Use pencil and charcoal

2. Color change
Before the place being abandoned, the color of the site is pretty simple(Bright silver, white..) cold color. However during the long vacant time, the place evolved by itself. Some plants were gone, some plants were appear, the material under the original surface are come out by erosion, which adding much more colors to the site, making the site visit experience more complicated.

[Sketchbook]Site observation

It is part of the industrial complex, this large steel structure used for transport sugar cane to the inside of the mill. This huge structure connects with sugar mill with only one conveyor.  All the remaining equipment here lead me to think about the time when here still full of human activities. Trucks of sugar cane came to sugar mill one after another and workers works on the giant machines, everything was moving from one place to another. But now without any activities even people, the place is pretty hollow and quiet.

[Reflection 03]

As a large place, different features of the components in the site will effect people's experience. Like the height contrast between industrial and agricultural space; The skyline of the industrial complex; Some color fading sign looks like telling you an old story. I'm learning from the artist Jack whitten to combine the different elements(Images and Drawings) from the site to represent the site, but every little pieces has its own story.

Invention 03 Jack Whitten

What I want to learn from these works of the artist Jack Whitten is using paint as a medium. Transforming paint compounds into tiles, and applying them to the canvas as mosaics, but zoom in the small squares, they have their own stories. Also, the color he used provide a contrast but clear vision to people.

[development project 01]

So here is the development of the project 01--the Industrial space, I try to combine the most unique features in this space to create a image: the stack, weed and the huge industrial complex.

[Project 01] Narrating the story

1.Agricultural fields

Features: Flat, dark deep soil, special terrace, in use

2.Industrial complex

Higher elevation, tall bright chimney stack, huge steel structures, abandoned

3. Relationship between the fields and Cinclare sugar mill
