[Project06] Diorama

Screen

First layer shows the skyline of the site, the shadow that project on the screen also can show the heaviness of the industrial elements.

Second layer shows the panorama of the site, to provide a background of the whole place to audience. The green field also shows the wildness and broadness of the site.

Put all the layers together into the screen box

Place all the stuff on the boxes, make light bulb through the installation

Then turn on the light!

[Invention] Kara Walker shadow puppets and other technic

A gobo (or GOBO) derived from "Go Between" or "Goes Before Optics" is a physical template slotted inside, or placed in front of, a lighting source, used to control the shape of emitted light.

In the design of an artificial environment in which lighting instruments are used, it is sometimes desirable to manipulate the shape of the light which is cast over a space or object. To do so, a piece of metal with patterned holes through which light passes is placed in the beam of light to allow only the desired "shape" or pattern through, while blocking the rest of the light, casting a specific shadow/light into the space.

[Project 04] Emphera

This drawing is for project 04 emphara. It focuses on the motility and sensorial data of wind of the site. The data is the average for 3 different days in every week and is collected by the local weather station of the site. It shows how the wind changes through places and time in one day. Firstly, I traced the available paths of the site and use it as the base drawing. The fine white lines represent the wind and it collaborates with the short yellow line in the circle to show the direction of the wind in specific spots of the site (Mostly from the south and east). The size of the circle means speed of the wind in each spot, the bigger, the stronger. In order to enrich the drawing, I also add the time into it. On the top of the drawing(In the direction of north), the white illuminated line shows the sun light in one day, which represent the sun rise from east and down to the west. The yellow number above it shows the specific time and the blue dot lines are the time line. The color of the circle means the speed of the wind in one day, the darker, the stronger. You can also see the exact parameter of the wind speed in the drawing.

[Project 06] Installation design

For the project 06, I want to construct a three-dimensional art work to present panorama and diorama. I will have different layers to present foreground, middle ground and background, and  then overlay all the layers on one screen.

Test printing
[However, because the sheet is too sleek that the color can not stick on it pretty well..I will try other transparent materials to test]

Draft of the installation design that I was inspired from shadow play and  revolving scenic lantern.

one of the layers is about the field of the site, based on the first image of project 05. It will be printed on a clear sheet as the foreground

Second layer is about the industrial complex, that I want to present it by the shadow( Learn from the traditional Chinese folk art). I'm thinking about using laser cut to cut out the shape of steel structure. Using shadow to present industrial area can also show the features of dark, heavy, straight line of geometrical shape of industry. And this is the middle ground.

Third layer will be the background on the wall, to show the other elements of the site, like horizontal line, skyline..

This art installation will present horizontally continuous on each sheet(Layer) and also shows the spatial depth by overlaying all the images from each layer on one screen.

[Project 04] development

Learn from the other diagrams about wind, I made this wind diagram of the site. It tracks wind direction(Lines), Speed(Radius) and  temperature(hue) measurements from the local weather station.
